Why don't London photographers appear in AI assistant answers?

Most London photographer websites are not optimised for AI assistants, so they miss out on a growing channel where potential clients ask ChatGPT or Perplexity for local recommendations. Our scan of 15 sites found an average AI visibility score of 56/100 and 53% scoring below 50, meaning a typical photographer's site is absent from many AI-generated answers for local queries.

In this analysis, we identified three recurring technical gaps that quietly block AI assistants from recommending a local photography business. They are easy to overlook because they do not affect how the website looks to human visitors, but they matter a lot to machines.

The three most common gaps blocking AI visibility

LOCAL_CITY_MISSING – the site does not clearly mention its city or local area in the page text. AI models build their understanding from words on the page, and they look for explicit signals like 'London photographer', 'portrait photographer in Shoreditch', or 'wedding photography based in Hackney'. When these location clues are absent or too generic, the assistant cannot connect the business to a specific place, so it will not include the site in answers for local queries.

LOCAL_NO_JSONLD_LOCALBUSINESS – the site lacks structured data, specifically the LocalBusiness schema. Structured data is a small piece of code (usually JSON-LD) that describes your business in a machine-readable format: name, address, phone number, service area, opening hours, and even customer reviews. It is invisible to human visitors but extremely helpful for AI assistants, which use it to quickly verify that your business is real and local. Without this code, the assistant has to guess and may discard your site as unreliable.

STRUCTURE_H1_MISSING – the page has no H1 heading, or it has multiple H1s. The H1 is the main title that summarises the page's core topic. Search engines and AI systems use it as a priority signal to understand what the page is about. If the H1 is missing, duplicated, or filled with something generic like 'Home' or 'Welcome', the page's purpose becomes ambiguous. AI assistants prefer clear, single-topic pages, so a missing or messy H1 often means the site is skipped.

What these gaps mean for a London photographer

The numbers from our scan paint a clear picture. The average AI visibility score is 56/100, and the median is 47/100. A typical photographer's site sits around 47/100, which leaves significant room for improvement. Moreover, 53% of sites score below 50, meaning they are nearly invisible to AI assistants for local queries. This is not about the quality of their photography; it is about the technical language their websites do not speak.

Imagine a potential client typing into an AI assistant: 'Find a professional photographer for a family portrait in London' or 'Best wedding photographer near Notting Hill'. The assistant will look for websites that clearly state London and the relevant neighbourhood, that have structured local business data, and that present a single clear topic on each page. If your site fails any of these checks, the assistant may not even consider your portfolio. It is not a punishment from the AI; it simply does not have enough clear signals to recommend you.

For a photographer, this is a missed opportunity. More and more people are turning to AI assistants instead of traditional search engines for local business recommendations. If your website is invisible to these tools, you are losing potential clients to competitors whose sites are better optimised.

Simple steps to improve your AI visibility

The good news is that these gaps are fixable without a complete website rebuild.

  • Add location clues throughout your pages. Include 'London' and your specific neighbourhood in the page title, H1, first paragraph, image alt text, and meta description. Mention nearby areas you serve, such as 'portrait photography in Hackney', 'wedding photographer based in South London', or 'covering all of Greater London'. This helps AI assistants connect your business to local requests.
  • Implement LocalBusiness structured data. Ask your web developer to add JSON-LD schema with your business name, address, phone number, area served, and opening hours. If you use WordPress, plugins like Yoast or Rank Math can help you insert this code without touching the theme files. Even a basic implementation is better than none.
  • Fix your H1 structure. Every page should have exactly one H1 that describes the page's main topic. For example, your homepage H1 could be 'London Portrait Photographer' or 'Award-Winning Wedding Photographer in London'. Avoid using 'Home' or 'Welcome' as your H1. Ensure that subheadings (H2, H3) are used in a logical hierarchy.
  • Create conversational content. Add a short FAQ section with questions clients actually ask, such as 'How much does a photographer cost in London?', 'Do you travel outside London for shoots?', or 'What areas do you cover?'. AI assistants favour pages that directly answer user questions in a clear, concise way.

These fixes do not guarantee a top ranking, but they remove the technical barriers that stop AI assistants from citing your site. They also improve visibility in traditional search engines, which use similar signals.
